The Wanderer

Victorian (1837–1901)
Storied Find #: 068-25
Made c.1880–1910, this ring sits at the graceful threshold between the Late Victorian taste for classical revival and the lighter, more refined sensibility that would fully emerge in the Edwardian years. It centres on a navette-shaped hardstone cameo — a deeply atmospheric blue-teal ground from which a classical female figure emerges in white relief, caught mid-stride as though she has somewhere important to be. She faces left in profile, her robes gathered and flowing. The cameo is encircled by a close border of pearls set into an 18ct rose gold frame. The shank tapers smoothly to each shoulder, where it meets the setting with a neat, unadorned join — all the ornamentation concentrated at the face of the ring.
Story of the Stone

Hardstone cameos have protected their wearers since the ancient world, where chalcedony was carved into amulets to ward off poison and evil. By the Georgian and Victorian periods, a cameo was equally a statement of classical taste and personal sentiment — a guardian stone that had become a love token, a Grand Tour souvenir, and ultimately a mark of cultivated identity.
