Crafted in Birmingham approximately 1872, this piece is a double-sided fob pendant in warm 9-carat rose gold — a small, perfectly circular object that fits the palm like a secret. One face houses a working compass beneath a domed cover, its aged dial printed with cardinal and intercardinal points and the words Made in England; the other presents a flat-polished bloodstone tablet — deep forest green scattered with red and gold flecks — set flush within a smooth, wide bezel. The two faces are entirely different in character: one restless and outward-looking, the other still and grounded, as though the piece holds two temperaments in a single rose gold frame.

Bloodstone has been one of Europe's great protective talismans since antiquity — the Leyden Papyrus of 250 AD declaring it could appease kings, grant wishes, and lend its wearer irresistible authority. Christian tradition further hallowed the stone, associating its crimson flecks with the blood of Christ; it was carved into sacred amulets throughout the medieval period and remained the March birthstone — signifying courage — well into Victorian times.
