The Spindrift

Edwardian (1901–1915)
Storied Find #: 053-26
Crafted in 9ct yellow gold approximately c.1905–1915, The Spindrift is an Edwardian pendant necklace of particular lightness and linear grace. A round aquamarine, bezel-set with millegrain edging, sits as a station mid-chain before descending via a slender straight bar to an open oval frame, within which a larger oval aquamarine swings freely in its own millegrain collet — catching the light differently with every movement. The stones share the same pale, glassy blue-green — the colour of shallow coastal water or the delicate spray of a breaking wave — and together they create a sense of gentle suspension, as though the piece is perpetually mid-fall.
Length: 43cm
Sentimental Token

In the Victorian language of gems — a tradition that carried seamlessly into the Edwardian era — aquamarine signified hope, and love kept clear and unclouded. Its exceptional transparency made it a fitting emblem of truthful affection. That the stone arrived at the jeweller's bench already carrying two thousand years of protective lore as the Sailor's Stone makes it richer still — but it is hope, not the sea, that governs a piece like this. In modern associations, aquamarine is the birthstone for March and the recognised stone for the 19th wedding anniversary.
