Made c.1960–1970, the Alchemist is a commanding embodiment — that a single stone, chosen well, needs nothing else to make its case. Selected for its remarkable alexandrite-like properties, this synthetic corundum possesses a hypnotic colour-change nature, shifting from a regal reddish-purple under incandescent warmth to a cool greyish-blue purple in the light of day. The gem sits within 14ct yellow gold, sculptural leaf-like shoulders meeting the head in three decorative spheres above an open-worked frame — an architectural design that floods the pavilion with light, ensuring its mercurial presence is felt from every angle.

Natural alexandrite was largely exhausted from its original Russian mines within decades of discovery. When it was designated a modern June birthstone in 1952, demand surged for a stone that had almost ceased to exist. Synthetic colour-change corundum stepped directly into that gap. Chemically, it belongs to the corundum family — the same mineral species as sapphire and ruby — grown in a laboratory rather than formed over millennia by the earth.

The mount shows light surface wear commensurate with its decades of existence — present under magnification. The stone is similarly well preserved: light wear to the facet edges and a very small chip near one of the v-prongs is detectable under magnification, but the gem remains brilliant on the hand and has no impact on the stone's appearance. The marquise tips, the most vulnerable points of any stone in this cut, are well protected and held securely in their v-prongs.

The open scrollwork gallery, whilst a delight in how it floods the stone with light, is also a collector of dust and debris — a soft toothbrush and lukewarm mild soapy water, working carefully into the recesses of the gallery and around the v-prongs at the tips, will keep it looking its best. Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner — the vibrations can be unkind to vintage settings and may disturb the stone's security over time.

The colour-change phenomenon is entirely natural to the stone's composition and requires no special protection, but keeping the pavilion clear of residue ensures you always see the full drama of the shift from purple to blue-green.
