The 18ct yellow gold has developed a warm, natural patina across its 126 years, and the scroll detailing at the shoulders remains crisp and well-defined. Under magnification, one ruby exhibits a minor era-appropriate 'flea bite' to a facet edge — invisible to the naked eye and without any impact on the stone's brilliance. All settings are secure.

Gemstone Hardness: Ruby — 9 on the Mohs scale (exceptional; second only to diamond in hardness). Diamond — 10 on the Mohs scale (the hardest natural material known).
Rubies and diamonds welcome a gentle refresh. Clean periodically using a bowl of lukewarm, mild soapy water and a very soft toothbrush to clear away the dust of daily wear. While modern pieces can often tolerate an ultrasonic cleaner, this antique setting should not — the vibrations can loosen old grain-set stones.
A professional health check once a year is recommended to ensure the grain settings remain stable and your jewel is secure for the years ahead.
