The Familiar Wink

Victorian (1837–1901)
Storied Find #: 092-26
Crafted in 18ct gold, circa 1880–1900, this five-stone ring sets two cat's eye chrysoberyl cabochons, deep in olive tone, to either side of a bright old cut diamond, with two smaller diamonds carried further along the shoulders. Turn the ring in the light and each chrysoberyl's pale line shifts and narrows, opening and closing like a slow wink. The hand-pierced gallery beneath the stones lets light move through the setting as much as across it, a small technical flourish typical of the period's best work. Warm gold, cool stone, and that single moving thread of light give the piece a watchful, faintly animate presence on the hand.
Timeless Guardian

Cat's eye chrysoberyl carried a formidable reputation as a guardian stone across South Asian gem tradition, already long-established by the time it reached fashionable Britain in the closing decades of the 19th century. Each stone was believed to house a good spirit, one credited with watching over its owner's fortunes broadly, wealth included, and warding off misfortune. Diamond carried its own inheritance as the medieval world's "unconquerable" stone. Set together, the two traditions speak to protection and endurance: a ring meant to shield its wearer through whatever came.
