Fashioned in the final decades of the nineteenth century, this seal fob pendant is a portrait in miniature of Victorian leisure at its most particular — a pair of crossed croquet mallets rendered in three dimensions in warm 9ct rose gold, suspended above a circular chalcedony seal disc whose pale, cream-white face is set within a chased border. Seated at the crossing of the mallets, like a small sun at the centre of its own world, is a single mid-pink coral bouton — its warm blush a deliberate counterpoint to the coolness of the chalcedony below. It suspends from a plain wire loop, designed to move freely.

The 9ct rose gold has developed a warm, period-correct patina. Both the chalcedony seal disc and the coral bouton are well preserved, and the chased detailing on the disc surround remains crisp and legible. All settings and fittings are secure.

Everyday Wear

Coral — Mohs hardness 3 to 4 — is one of the softer organic gem materials and warrants careful handling. Both the coral bouton and the chalcedony seal disc fall within the Sculptural Friends family: keep lotions, oils, and perfumes well away from their surfaces, as these can stain or dull the natural finish over time. Do not submerge this piece in water or subject it to ultrasonic cleaning — the coral in particular is porous and sensitive to chemicals and prolonged moisture. After wearing, wipe gently with a dry, lint-free cloth.

The 9ct rose gold will continue to develop its patina naturally. A soft polishing cloth will brighten it when desired, though the existing patina is part of the piece's character and worth preserving.
