The Enchantress (c.1889)

Victorian (1837–1901)
Storied Find #: 069-25
Hand-fabricated in Birmingham, c. 1889, this rose gold navette ring commands the hand. The elongated pointed form creates a silhouette that is deeply feminine, its warm rose gold deepened by more than a century of honest wear. Thirteen natural pearls are gathered across the face in a constellation of cream and soft rose-overtone lustre, their rounded forms filling every space with a gentle luminosity. At the heart of the composition, two garnet-topped doublets of deep blue-violet — their darkness giving the whole piece its drama and its depth. The shoulders of the shank carry decorative ribbing where they meet the gallery.
Story of the Stone

In the workshops of the French Jura in the 1840s, a lapidary made a discovery that would transform the jewellery trade: molten glass fuses to garnet without cracking — a property no other gemstone shares. The result was the garnet-topped doublet: a thin slice of natural almandine garnet fused directly to a body of coloured glass, no adhesive required. The colour of the glass dominates entirely — blue, green, ruby red — while the garnet crown, harder than glass at 7.5 on the Mohs scale, protects the surface from wear and lends it a luster and natural inclusions convincing enough to rival natural stones at a glance. Born of economy, executed with genuine ingenuity, and now a small piece of Victorian industrial history worn on the hand.
