The Fortunate Heart

Victorian (1837–1901)
Storied Find #: 083-26
Constructed approximately 1895–1905, at the turn of a century, this pendant speaks in the language of optimism — four heart-shaped panels of frosted rock crystal, lapped to a fine finish and individually set, radiating from a polished gold centre in the form of a four-leaf clover. The near-colourless crystal soft against the warm mellow depth of the 18ct yellow gold framework that holds it. Diamonds at the stem and centre to punctuate the clover. This is a piece made by a jeweller working at the height of their craft, the cast and hand-fabricated elements seamlessly resolved. A transitional object that carries the meticulous hand-bench tradition of the Victorian era into the more confident elegance of the Edwardian moment just arriving.
Sentimental Token

In the Victorian language of gems, rock crystal spoke the most unambiguous of all pledges: "Forever thine." Inclusions within the stone were called Cupid's arrows or Venus' hair — love made visible inside the mineral itself. Clear, enduring, and without artifice, it was the gem of absolute transparency between two people. The four-leaf clover has long been worn as a wish for good fortune, deepening the tender language already written into the stones.
